This week’s post is all about recycling. I’m ashamed to say that in the past I didn’t recycle. I grew up recycling aluminum cans but that is it. Now I sort out cardboard, plastic, glass, paper, ect. Here are a few benefits I’ve realized.
- The environment …duh! 🙂 I don’t like seeing trash filling landfills, especially if it can be re-used in something else. Why not keep reusing items until they can’t be used any more!
- I use reusable shopping bags a lot. You can get bigger ones, smaller ones, and my personal favorite that is made from heavy plastic and insulated (ideal when grocery shopping!). I also have a pretty big one that hooks on your shopping cart so you can fill it as you shop and just have the cashier put items back in it. Brilliant btw!! 🙂 Also my local grocery store gives me a small discount for bringing in my own bag (.05 per transaction) and some stores randomly offer additional discounts if you shop in their store – with their bag.
- I save a lot of money on trash bags! In the past my roommate and I put everything in trash bags – many of those items I now recycle. I bet we’d go through 2-3 kitchen sized bags a week. Now we have cut back to one bag for about a week and a half. Its amazing at how much our usage has changed by simply recycling! The most notable is that my roommate drinks a lot of soda that he buys in 20 oz bottles. A few those will fill up a trash can pretty fast!
- Recylebank! Have you heard of this awesome website?! You participate in little activities, mainly watch small videos or read about recycling every day items. For each action you earn points. You can cash in points for coupons, discount codes on websites, or my personal favorite – magazines! I LOVE to read – but I haven’t paid for a magazine subscription in the past four years. And I subscribe to about 6-8 magazines…which I then recycle when I’m done reading them! There is something about flipping though a magazine that I love more than reading on my BN Nook Color.
I realize that a box of garbage bags is pretty inexpensive in the grand scheme of things, and saving a couple cents here an there by using a re-usable shopping bag might not seem like much but its all a step in the right direction. The biggest perk for me in recycling is seeing 1)how much I can accumulate in a week and 2)not being wasteful.
Do you recycle? Why do you do it?
Thanks for stopping by Gracious Luck and have a fantastic Friday!
