Over labor day weekend my mom, brother, and I went on a family day trip. Its been a long time since the three of us embarked on a new adventure. We decided to head across the river to South Dakota and see some new sights, visit a winery, and check out the waterfalls in Sioux Falls, SD.
I had read about Schade Vineyard (Volga, SD – about 3 hours from my mom’s) and their chokecherry wine!!! I love chokecherry jelly and thought a wine would be delicious! Once we got there, I sadly didn’t see chokecherry on their wine list (I should have called first-or at least asked) but tried Chokeberry, Plum, and Apple-Raspberry instead. This small winery does offer free samples, however, their staff wasn’t the most helpful. I feel bad typing that but coming off of a stellar visit to a winery the week before, this was a little disappointing. Their salesman did alight at providing our samples but seemed annoyed that we shared our various samples so we could get the most from our tastings without taking advantage of their generosity. When I asked about their wine, his answers were vague and it seemed like we disturbed him from something. In an attempt for a recommendation – I told him I preferred sweet wines like mascto or vignoles and he said all of our wine is sweet. End of story. So I just picked what sounded good.
However – the wine can speak for itself. It was quite refreshing and delicious! We left with five bottles between the three of us, so hopefully that made up for our annoying him!? It was our mom’s first (hopefully not last) visit to a winery and I wish she would have had a better experience. I’m not sure if we should have called ahead and let them know we were coming or of they are alright with walk-in customers. Overall, I would give this place a 3 out of 5. Some times I take for granted knowing so many awesome small business owners that it surprises me to encounter a “fair” experience. I would try this place one more time to see if we caught them on a bad day before I truly complain – every one and every business has a bad day every now and then.
I’ll let you know if we venture back or look elsewhere next time we decide to try out a South Dakota Winery!
Thanks for stopping by Gracious Luck today ~ have a wonderful day!
