Winter Lip Saver – Jack Black Lip Balm { review }

Hi Loves!  A few years ago I bought one of Sephora’s sun kits (those kits with various deluxe samples of sunscreen and sunblock- where proceeds go to charity) and was introduced to Jack Black lip balm.  Since then – I’ve been a huge fan of this product.  I live in Nebraska and during the winter, this one especially, it gets cold!  We had wind chills in the 40 below range a few times already and that’s so cold, a minute outside with your face uncovered literally makes it hurt!  (Think brain freeze from ice cream…but its your whole head that hurts and no yummy treat involved!)  I think its a subconscious reaction to lick dry lips – but that can be a bad idea in cold weather because it will make them dry out…peel…and possibly crack.

Every winter I go through trying new, less expensive or drugstore lip balms, but time after time, I come back to Jack!  Jack Black is my lip saver!  It is also one of the cheaper lip balms from Sephora.  Here are the details from Sephora.

JACK BLACK – Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25 $7.50

What it is:
A conditioning lip balm that protects lips from sun and wind, with soothing effects.

What it is formulated to do:
Field tested in extreme conditions, this hydrating balm contains antioxidants and superior moisturizers to provide lasting treatment benefits. It provides broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection.

What else you need to know:
Shea butter and avocado oil deliver moisture while vitamin E and green tea contribute antioxidant fortification. For powerful sun protection, PARSOL and Octinoxate team up to block both UVA and UVB rays.

My thoughts:
Flavor -I’ve had the Lemon & Chamomile and I’m currently working through the Black Tea & Blackberry flavor.  Out of the two – I prefer the black tea & blackberry flavor but I’m not a big fan of lemon so that’s mainly why.  If you like lemon, I’m sure you’d like the other.  I will say that I care for overly flavored or fake tasting balms and this flavor is barely there.  (Other flavors available are Grapefruit & Ginger, and Original which is minty.)

Texture- Its a clear, thick balm.  My lips aren’t glossy but they do feel moisturized and soft with this on.  In the spring/summer/fall a little dab is all I need.  During brutal cold winter – I go for of a more pea sized amount.  I look at it as a barrier between winter air and my lips and during the winter I want the extra coverage.  I also love that it has SPF in it to help protect you year round from the sun.

Usage-I tend to grab this when its really cold, I’m sick, or my lips are roughed up.  I don’t necessarily use it daily but I feel confident in using it several times a day if I really need it.  Some drugstore brands that get raves from beauty bloggers actually seem to dry my lips out more or make my lips worse during the winter.

Scent-It is very lightly scented.  I don’t notice it after a couple minutes.

Bottom Line:
This is a buy it for me!
I really like it but typically only reach for it during the fall & winter because it is heavier that most.  (Its intense after all – and they mean it!) Jack Black is a men’s skincare line, but if it works, I don’t mind.  Before buying the sephora kit – I’m not sure that I would have given this a chance since I rarely shop in men’s skincare.  However – I’ve never been happier with a lip product.

Have you tried this?  What’s your go to lip rescuer when your lips are dry like the Sahara!?

Thanks for stopping by Gracious Luck – have a wonderful and hopefully warm day!

I’m soooo glad that you did a review on one of the Jack Black products! I know it’s a guy’s product line, but I’ve been dying to try some myself (the name got me, and I was curious). I scored a free sample of the buff me (face scrub) from them and haven’t tested it yet. Good to know their lip balm is a win! 🙂

Really?! I’ve always liked it but in true review fashion, what one of us likes another seems to despise some times! 🙂 I would say the scent my throw some people off, I know the lemon scent seemed kind of strong in the other tube I had but I really like the product.
